Build your own aircooled racer
Take an aircooled Volkswagen engine rocker cover, add wheels, a little engineering and as much personality as you like, then bring it along to Field of Dreams and see how it performs on the track.
Rocker Cover Racing at Field of Dreams
Open to adults and children — just make sure your racer meets the rules below.
Rocker Cover Rules
Your racer can be as simple, clever, original or completely bonkers as you like — but it must meet these basic construction rules.
- The main body of the racer must be a rocker cover from an aircooled Volkswagen engine.
- Racers must run on gravity only. Motors, engines or any other form of propulsion are not allowed.
- Moving weights, shifting ballast or counterweights are not permitted.
- Wheels may be mounted however you choose, but they must not project beyond the front or rear of the rocker cover.
- Every racer must have at least four wheels.
- Wheels must be no more than 8cm in diameter.
- The part of each wheel touching the track must have a non-metallic surface.
- Nothing may extend forwards beyond the front of the rocker cover.
How big can it be?
Measure and weigh your racer before you arrive. These are the maximum permitted dimensions.
Race Rules
- Your rocker cover must arrive clean and free from oil or grease. A racer leaking onto the track may be disqualified.
- Give your racer a name so it can be identified during the competition.
- Racers compete under gravity from the top of the track. Nobody may push, launch or otherwise assist a racer.
- Interfering with another competitor's racer during a run means losing that round.
- If a racer is affected by a genuine problem with the track, the judge may allow the run to be repeated.
- Any technical dispute will be decided by the race judge.
- The judge's decision is final.
Track Specification
The race is run head-to-head on a two-lane gravity track.
- The track has two lanes.
- Each lane is 27.5cm wide.
- The course begins approximately 1.5 metres high.
- The downhill section is approximately 6 metres long.
- There is approximately 1.3 metres of run-out before the finish.
Make it yours
Ratty, shiny, stock-looking, race-inspired or completely ridiculous — the design is up to you. Paint it, decorate it, add a driver or give it a proper race-car identity. As long as it stays within the rules, creativity is encouraged.
